AI: Hype, Concern, and What We Do With the Tool

AI, it’s the hottest tech on the block these days. We have ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini, and Claude, and these are just the most widely used ones. It’s progressing fast, as tech goes, due to the immense interest in its capabilities.

Given what AI can already do and how quickly it is improving, there is an initial fascination with AI. However, there is also real concern about how rapidly AI is evolving and what it means for the economy and society as a whole.

Some of these concerns are real, and some are just an overreaction. After reading some interesting articles and working with AI almost daily, I can say that the concerns are legitimate, but it might not be doomsday just yet.

Yes, the AI models are getting smarter, but only in very specific ways. They are becoming increasingly efficient at writing code and orchestrating a wide range of programming tasks.

While I am just scratching the surface of the AI debate, what I have learned is that AI is a tool. As such, it can be used for good and bad. As of today, we are still in control of it, and we need to ensure its ethical use.

We can either fear AI or take it for what it is and ensure we have proper governance and oversight to keep it from becoming more than a tool. I, for one, do not want to fear it; I want to know how it works and how I can make it work for the betterment of humanity.

There will be economic impacts. As more companies race to implement AI to increase productivity, software engineering roles will need to change. Code will be written increasingly by AI. Today's software engineers will need to step up to take oversight of AI.

AI is here, and there is no going back. What we need to do is ensure we have proper ethical and moral governance over this technology. The future with AI looks different, yes, but we still have a chance to control how that future works out for everyone.

So what now? I am choosing to learn AI and trust God with the bigger picture. What has your experience been with AI? I’d love to hear your story.
