From Chaos to Calm: What Reorganizing My Desk Taught Me About Mental Clarity

Today, I took some time out to reorganize my standing computer desk. I received a really nice monitor stand and wire manager kit for Christmas this year and hadn’t gotten around to setting them up until today. It was worth every minute.

I had to assemble the stand first, which is a raised platform that includes 2 small shelves and a nice hideaway opening for my keyboard. The wire manager mounts to the underside of my desk and hides all my cords, neatly bundled with Velcro straps.

I had to undo my existing wire management system. This was nothing more than some zip ties and plastic twist ties. Then, I had to unplug everything from the power strip and untangle the mess of knotted cords.

I cleared the desk completely, cleaned everything thoroughly, and then dusted and cleaned the desktop. I also had to take the monitor off its wall mount and reattach the stand that came with it so it would sit on my nice, new monitor platform.

Once I had all the wires neatly tucked away and everything connected properly, I put my most important accessories in the new drawers: USB drives, pens, Post-it notepads, and an assortment of charger plugs.

When it was done, I stepped back, looked at it, and that’s when it hit me. I may have been able to spend those 2 hours doing something that would have helped me accomplish my goals. But those 2 hours were not wasted time.

I realized that having a cluttered, disorganized desk was actually making me feel disorganized. Constantly staring at the chaos that was my main workspace was affecting me mentally.

How do I know this? The moment I had a chance to look at the newly organized space, I felt a bit of that chaos fall away. It was replaced with calmness and tranquility. Now, when I look at my desk, I see organization. That will only help promote clarity and peace of mind.

It reminds me of how God, in Genesis 1, made order out of the chaos:

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. [Gen 1:1 ESV]
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. [Gen 1:2 ESV]

So, if you are feeling unfocused, anxious, or out of sorts, find the closest clutter in your space and organize it. I’ll bet you come away feeling so much better. I did. What do you have to lose?
