Multipotentialite by Design: Accepting God's Blueprint for a Life of Many Interests

This week, I have been busy working on my new blogging website. I posted about this a couple of days ago. In that article, I outlined exactly why I am starting a second website.

Now my cousin, Mark, and I agree on many things, including having a second website. Where that agreement ends is in the execution of this grand plan.

Mark is a productivity coach, and a very good one at that. He's the one who pitched me the idea for a second website for my posts. He was spot on with the reasoning.

However, Mark is also a single-focused individual. He is 100% focused on his productivity business. This means he tries to delegate as much non-productivity-related work to others.

He suggested that I just sign up for a WordPress site on an established platform like Hostinger. That way, they take care of the back-end stuff, leaving me free to focus on my writing.

As much as I appreciate his wise counsel, I am not wired that way. The more I learn about myself, the more I realize that I am a person who thrives on variety. I will never be happy doing just one thing.

After reading the book How to Be Everything by Emilie Wapnick, I realize that I am a multipotentialite. A multipotentialite is a person with many interests and creative pursuits. Often, a multipotentialite needs more than a single focus to be happy.

So, while my cousin can easily focus on just his productivity and speaking, I need the variety in my career. That is why I always gravitated toward positions that gave me the freedom to experiment and do things beyond the specific job requirements.

Now, I am not saying that my cousin has no other interests. He is an avid reader with many interests. However, when it comes to his career path, he is single-threaded and focused on productivity.

So, he removes anything that would be a stumbling block to his focus. I certainly applaud that. I, on the other hand, take a different approach altogether. I embrace my diverse interests and am trying to weave them together into a way to generate sustainable income.

For example, instead of delegating the setup and maintenance of a website to someone else, I plan to build it myself. I'll run it on my own VPS I created with Linode's help (I understand how it works), and I will administer it myself.

Once the website is done, I will document everything and generate a series of tutorial posts detailing the process and the outcome. I'll use the opportunity and the skills I have to both do the work and write about it. For me, that's a win-win situation.

The website is just one example. In future posts, I will give more examples as I chronicle my journey into the world of the multipotentialite. For the first time in a long time, I feel real hope about defining a career path that will be both satisfying and financially sound.

The most amazing yet terrifying part is that this career path will not be a single thing. And that's OK. God has designed me this way, and all I can do is accept His design and try my best to harness it.
