When was the last time you took a look at your professional life and reflected on how you got there? Have you ever wondered whether where you are now is really where you want to be? I have been asking myself these questions, and more, these past few months.
I have been involved with technology in some form or another for more than 25 years. My journey to get here is a series of opportunities that were presented to me over time, which got me hooked on technology. Once I was firmly entrenched in the tech world, I was so busy “doing” that I never stopped to consider other options.
Looking back on my time in high school, things were a lot different. I loved math and science. I would read physics and chemistry books for fun. Yes, I would even do math problems because I enjoyed solving equations.
I loved to write as well. I was the editor-in-chief of our school newspaper and a lead reporter. I would write short stories. I also did a stint as an intern at our local AM radio station on the weekends.
I had big dreams in high school. I was going to be a physicist, a journalist, or a writer. I was going to do something that mattered to the world. It’s funny how things don’t always end up like you think they will.
I have no regrets about he life I have led to this point. It has made me who I am. I found my way back to God and set myself up financially so that I am not in dire straits today, even after 6 months of unemployment.
However, as I work through the process of looking for work, sending out resumes, and doing all I can to connect with the “right” people, something doesn’t feel quite right. I think my time in technology as a career has run its course. I need to find something new and exciting.
It’s time to find work I love that makes me feel like I am doing what God wants me to do. I do not doubt that God put me in all those positions leading up to this point, and now is my Moses moment. Moses was in his 80s when God called him to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt. Talk about a late bloomer.
What am I going to do next? I will continue writing daily to hone my skills. I will also explore other options for me, outside of technology, to generate income. Finally, I will study, but instead of focusing on tech, I will start learning other subjects that interest me.
I won’t call it a re-invention, I’ll call it a reinvigoration. I am going to use the time I have to reinvest in the talents God gave me and to find the new path God wants me to travel. Whatever the outcome, the journey will be exciting.
